A Systems View of Climate Change
Al Gore, USAs förre vicepresident, ger sin syn på världen år 2020 i en krönika i Mistras nyhetsbrev. Han tror att klimatfrågan fortfarande är i fokus, men att det då även finns exempel på förbättringar.
By 2020, I hope the environment agenda recognizes the interconnectedness of our environmental, social and economic challenges. The days of silo thinking are over. Today, it is impossible to understand the implications of climate change without understanding the related issues of ecosystem services, water security, public health, urbanization, migration, and even poverty. These linked challenges may collectively affect civilization in completely new ways than we have seen in the past hundred years.Consider access to water, for example. The Himalayan Glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau have been among the most affected by climate change, providing more than half of the drinking water for 40% of the world´s population; seven Asian river systems originate on the Tibetan plateau. With global consumption doubling every 20 years, 48 countries are expected to face chronic water shortages by 2025, which will put up to 3 billion people in “water-stressed" situations.
