HELCOM
HELCOM, short for The Helsinki Commission, is the governing body of the "Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area" - more commonly known as the Helsinki Convention.

HELCOM works to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea from all sources of pollution through intergovernmental co-operation between the European Community, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Russia.

HELCOM´s vision for the future is a healthy Baltic Sea environment with diverse biological components functioning in balance, resulting in a good ecological status and supporting a wide range of sustainable economic and social activities.

Baltic Nest Institute is involved in various HELCOM projects;

* All countries around the Baltic have signed the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan.
This plan contains very detailed and specific quotas for all the countries in terms of the nutrient load reductions that are required to minimize the effects of eutrophication. These calculations were developed by BNI based on the models of NEST.
