ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES
— learning from best practice in fisheries management

Baltic Sea 2020, Baltic Nest Institute and the Stockholm Resilience Centre would like to invite you to a conference where applying best practices in the Baltic Sea illuminate the pan European challanges that need to be addressed:
  • Governance of the CFP
  • Economic and social incentives
  • Science and fisheries management
  • Integration of environmental considerations

Commissioner Borg will open the Conference and expert presentations will be given by renowned scientists and stakeholders.

Background:
Fisheries management has failed to deliver on its social, economic and environmental goals under the current European Fisheries Policy. Baltic Sea fisheries are a clear example, providing overwhelming evidence.

How can sustainability in European fisheries be achieved? What should sustainable fisheries look like? How could they be governed? What are long term incentives for various stakeholders? What is the role of science? How are environmental considerations included?

Initiatives on a national or regional level do not have the mandate to address these issues. The revision of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), initiated in the spring 2009, presents an opportunity to change the situati on for the better. By analysing fisheries management practices in Norway, USA and Canada, recommendations have been elaborated to provide broad conclusions about best practices.

These are applied to the Baltic Sea in order to develop a concrete scenario, exemplifying best practices which can be achieved through the reform of the CFP.

Date: 3rd April 2009

Programme will be posted March 15th.
