The Gulf of Finland (GoF) 2014 year is targeting on better understanding GoF as a system and production of new information on the status of the Gulf of Finland. The aim of the modelling workshop was to plan the GoF Year research activity.

BNI Participation
Involved BNI researchers from BNI Finland and Sweden were:

Scientific topics, where modeling tools are needed, included
i) description of the eutrophication process,
ii) maritime safety, especially in winter conditions,
iii) fish modeling, and
iv) modeling of climate change related issues.

The workshop aimed to:

  • establish linkages between groups focusing on modelling, observations, data assimilation, prediction and service provision;
  • finding gaps in knowledge and weaknesses in our ability to observe state of the Gulf of Finland, generate products and strengthen modeling capabilities and;
  • outline observational needs for models.

Projected outcomes of the workshop were:

  • a review of the current state-of-the-art research, gaps and advances in GoF observations, modeling, data assimilation and prediction;
  • action items with identified partners on how to coordinate overlapping interests, close gaps in knowledge, and enhance networking between groups; and
  • plan for the coordinated observational campaigns
