Description:

Baltic Visualization
Baltic Visualization (Baltic Viz) shows the past, present and future environmental state of the Baltic Sea. This visualization is based on the marine models developed at the Baltic Nest Institute, and is produced in cooperation with the Fisheries Centre at the University of British Columbia.

Baltic Viz will be able to show:

  • The changes in the food chain over time and their effects on the ecosystem
  • Impact of the concentration of nutrients on the sea, e.g. consequences of eutrophication
  • History of eutrophication and its effects 1900-2010
  • Scenarios and actions for change, e.g. changes in levels of fishery for different fish species

High level meeting
Saturday 2 July, Baltic Viz will be presented at a high level meeting arranged by Forum Östersjön, a non-profit organization working with communication and outreach regarding the Baltic Sea and its environment.

The meeting gathers members of Forum Östersjön's Advisory Board, led by former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jan Eliasson, as well as other prominent experts, including Björn Risinger (Director General of the new Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (SwAM)), Gabriella Lindholm (Swedish Ambassador for the Marine Environment), Åke Hagström (Prof. The Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment) and Jan Larsson (President of Forum Östersjön).

MARE-Programme
Lars-Erik Liljelund, Executive Director of MISTRA (The Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research), which has founded the work with the Baltic Viz project, is exited that the results of the research programme MARE can be presented to the general public in a visible way.

Based on the decision support system Baltic Nest developed during MARE, Baltic Viz visualizes the changes that has occured in the Baltic Sea ecosystem during the last hundred years.

ALMEDALEN
During the meeting, the state of the Baltic Sea environment and how it can be improved will be discussed, as well as Baltic Sea security issues. The meeting and its results will be communicated during Almedalen and its Baltic Sea seminars.
