About the Nest system
The Nest Decision Support System (DSS) was developed within the Mistra-financed MARE-project, an eight-year research program, running between 1999-2006, consisting of 30 scientist from Sweden.

The Nest system contains several models, which are interlinked with each other and a large database with marine and runoff data.

Understanding biogeochemistry and ecology of the Baltic Sea
The aim of the models in the Nest system is to understand the processes that have caused the drastic changes in eutrophication and food webs seen, and to evaluate effects of various management decisions for the future of the Baltic Sea.

This is accomplished by modelling the biogeochemical cycles of organic matter and nutrients and the food web, and investigating how these are altered in relation to eutrophication and fisheries. Nest also includes a model describing how human activities in the drainage basin will influence nutrient loads, as well as cost estimates for various abatement measures.

Extensive data set from the Baltic Sea, but also from the drainage basin and of nutrient loads from land and atmosphere, have also been made available.

Useful tool for management of the Baltic Sea
The Nest system, with its models and databases, is available on line, free of charge and can be run in both an expert mode and a manager mode. This dual modality is aimed at both researchers and managers.

The goal is that the model is used as a tool in management, but at the same time, underlying assumption and model parameters are presented in a transparent way for scientists to evaluate.
