Baltic Nest Institute continues the research started during the MARE - Marine Research on Eutrophication - research programme. The Mistra-finance MARE-project (1999 - 2006) developed a decision support system called the NEST model. Baltic NEST continues to be maintained and developed within the Baltic Nest Institute (BNI).

In 2011, the Finnish Environment Institute, SYKE, signed a cooperation agreement with BNI. The consortium, now with partners in Sweden, Denmark and Finland, will continue the development of the Baltic NEST model. The research consortium will deal with processes of the Baltic Sea drainage basin, functioning of marine ecosystems, assessment of the cost-effectiveness of conservation measures and societal regulation of the protection of the Baltic Sea.

BNI Finland is managed by Anna-Stiina Heiskanen, and gathers some 15 scientist in Helsinki.
